english accents
Sunday, October 28 12:08 PM

Cognitive pschology, chapter on language.

My prof included this link to a website - apparently they asked people from all over the world to read a passage in english, and then recorded down their voices.

http://classweb.gmu.edu/accent/

Click 'browse' and click 'atlas/regions'. Then select the area or country which you would like to hear the accent. Remember to give some time for the recording to load =)

The objective was to show the differences in accents from english speakers all over the world. Despite all the differences in pronounciation and sound, our brain is still able to comprehend the spoken english. coool~!

title: muse

When there's free time, and nothing for me to do, when it's very quiet around me, and nothing, no one, to distract me, I think. I used to daydream and stone alot in secondary school, and the feeling is nice and peaceful, even vaguely amusing sometimes. But currently the utopia has faded, and I am remembering less of the daydreams - it's becoming unsafe to let myself experience solitude.

And so I embrace packed RA sessions, late night muggings (i'm a gd student!), and constant exposure around friends - I lull myself into a sense of false security. But tonight, of all nights, I crave a long nightwalk to soothe myself. And yet tonight, of all nights, I am at home, and there is nowhere to walk. *drat. must think happy thots!!!*

At least I'm comforted that I will be happy again after a good night's rest.

--He who runs away, lives to run another day--

Hahha! That phrase popped out when I was telling my bro abt seeing a brown tree spider in the same toilet cubicle as me. When I realised it was on the wall...straightaway, I went into denial: "oh no. that is not a spider"

Then one sec later: "shit. it IS a spider!"
"ok.
don't move.
don't panic.
breathe.
no, don't move, perhaps it can't see u.
let's get outta here!!!"

I tell you, the last time I ran from the toilet was when I saw a praying mantis hanging from the overhead lightbulb, leering at me. (Hannah n Ting didn't even bother to stifle their giggles at the sight of poor distraught stephie -.-")

----------------------------------------------------------------------
That was on tuesday. And then on thursday, I began my volunteer visit to the Boys' Home. Yup, that's right, I'm volunteering there, as part of my school's Welfare Services Club.

Once a week, every thurs night, and the rule is "no shorts, no skirts, no sleeveless, no slippers". It's a boys' home, duh, not a party place. Although, I was still amazed at the amount of security gates we had to go thru.

Our role, as befrienders, was relatively easy - talk and play games with the boys. Which was what we did ^^ Kudos to Desiree for thinking up the highly entertaining Zhong Ji Mi Ma! At the end of the session, we were all grinning at the forfeits (sing a song) and trying our best to hai each other.

It was a bit scary at first, going into a quiet security compound, which suddenly became loud and noisy when the boys saw us, and some even shouted out to us throught the fencing. And I didn't know what it would be like, talking to them. I was quite wary, in such a foreign environment. The ones we talked to were rather street-smart, and quick, which made them seem older than they really are.

Next saturday's Family Day - lots of games, and their families will come to visit them and join in the fun. We might even get to join in the games with the boys! Hopefully everyone will be more open and relaxed then. And maybe, they'll see us as friends...

And to round off the school week, on friday, me jul qi went to the NIE bazaar for a bout of retail therapy, where I cheerfully (ok, not that cheerfull) handed over $50 in exchange for 1 snowwhitedwarf shirt, 1 littlemiss shirt, 1 slogan t, and 1 artistically designed denim skirt.

I think I spent the most. damn. *tiny guilty feeling*

And to round it off, we and ting trooped over to the nearby hall canteen for ice cream waffles and hotdog with meat sauce. hooray!

bipolar depression
Tuesday, October 9 11:29 PM

Mood disorder: Depression & Mania
Depression: intense sadness, worthlessness, social withdrawal, for an excessively long time
Mania: elation, lack of focus, impulsive actions, almost boundless energy, impaired social functioning
Bipolar: one or more manic episodes usually accompanied by one or more depressive episodes - extremes of emotions

Common, Inherited genetic tendency that gets activated by stressors, Effective drug treatment and therapy, Importance of social support to prevent relapses. Social stigma can be a deadly thing.

and yet...all these failed to capture
the pain
the conflict
the suffering
the sacrifices made
the lack of control
the loneliness
the raw determination
immense choice

Humans, not rats, not robots, not mere data in a clinical case. Today's lunchtime talk on depression has made me understand something that my textbook was not able to teach me.

those who seek help, seek counselling, choose to take the drugs, face it: they are stronger, braver and more human than they ever knew they could be

steamboat and waraku
10:01 PM

Last friday was a good day. Manic and I (minus yami, mm, jy) had a good dinner. (jy got good excuse) A really really really good dinner! STEAMBOAT. They went out to buy ingredients, and then we all happily met up at Qi's hall pantry to prepare the food. I'm proud to say, I learnt how to chop bloody liver (fun!^^) and fish *grin*

Fish, liver, chicken, prawns, mushroom (3 types thanks to the president), quail eggs, crabsticks, beancurd, tomatoes, sausages, fish/sotong balls...all were nicely prepared.

And we even had splendid-fun utensils, kudos to our creative director-secretary!

Here's mine! So cute hor! it's a ghost drawing, NOT a sotong drawing. haha!

And then we ate and ate (and drank all my ribena =p) until we were sooo full. Then we bullied qi's bf to get us ice creams for dessert haha. Ice cream was eaten in the lounge, where we watched fei ge, chatted, got entertained by xian's icecream-eating-trick, and gossipped. haha!

--------------------------------------------------

Last sunday was also a good day. Went out for dinner celebrations at Waraku (not the pasta one) and smart Endi booked the super fun tatami seats. I luv Endi!

hahaha opps! I meant I heart JunYu also (very bad to ignore the bday boy). yup so I'll divide my attention equally between Endi, JunYu and Fred (joking tone).

Here we are, and the present was Interesting! hahahah shall not say it here.

But then, the 3 of them went off to watch a movie, and I went home. Sad rite...cos I can't stay out late, house rules.

Me: sorry I really can't
Viv: tell your dad that Endi will be there
Endi: even better, tell your dad that TWO guys will be there
Viv: THAT's why her dad is worried

But luckily they watched Resident Evil (scary!) or else I'll really regret not going. Viv actually wanted to watch Nanny Diaries, but JunYu, being the manly man and all that, decided it was too sissy for him.

Endi: eh! since he (JunYu) is not here to buy the tix with us, I suggest we buy Nanny Diaries, and tell him it's Resident Evil.
Me: but won't he see the show name before entering the theatre?
Endi: no problem! We just keep talking to him, distract him until he's seated down. When Scarlett Johansson walks onscreen, we'll say "it's correct. don't worry! she'll become evil soon"
Viv: GOOD IDEA! (pauses) but...his birthday leh...cannot like that...haiz so sad
=)

It has come to this
Thursday, October 4 8:06 PM

I think my heart just cracked. I'm sure. I heard it. And that's even though I supposedly have a 'true love'. In the words of Ebenezer Scrooge, Bah humbug! I can't believe my mood just swung in the space of an hour. It has come. It hurts. I don't want to feel it. Drug me happy.

-mends back crack with milo, fries, short nap, and much later, chewing raisin bread as i walk-

this is so going into my repressed memories file!

I love you in a different context

Title: I love you in a different context

Just in case you don't know, the S/U period is ending...

French is fun. But hard.
I luv Marie but I luv Sabine too. Probably more.
Perhaps I'm just biased.
Marie is very good too.
But I miss Sabine.
I miss having lessons with my old friends too.
But they're either in her class or gone away.
Why do I feel envious of them?
So bad of me.
People in my class are friendlier now.
That's good.

Marie's funny coz she speaks Malay sometimes.
today we were talking about songs.
She said a song title in Malay.
I asked the malaysian next to me.
"What does it mean?"
he looked at me
he said "I love you"

how funny!
my first three words from a guy.

LOLx

junyu's bday
7:15 PM

Just now I saw the longest queue in NTU, nanyang audi to the 7-11. So kua zhang, and interesting, reminded me somewhat of disneyland queues, although I doubt the waiting time is as long. U noe, when u're queuing, and the queue is FOREVER, it always helps to wait with friends or family. "coz time flies when you're having fun!"

Speaking of friends and fun, where are the photos to the swensons outing?! Now I know how they felt when I forgot to send over the photos last time. haha. I'm having another outing this sunday - pour celebrer l'anniversaire de JunYu! He so totally rocks because he's treating us to waraku. hahahah no lah, he rocks also for being our good friend. *wonders if he still calls me olive* And to thank him for his friendship, we're giving him an interesting and highly useful gift *cough*

Jul and ting know about the gift BUT dont tag in the board k, just in case he reads it.
